Welcome to Project LEAD 2017
Project LEAD (Leaders Empowering Action Day) aims to bring together multidisciplinary professionals, creatives and problem solvers for a day to work on issues facing the most vulnerable members of the local Asian American community.
Project LEAD was conceived from the intersection of a set of unique circumstances inherent to 2017.
The first is that this is Project by Project's 20th anniversary. In anniversary years, we step back and consider the many issues that afflict various segments of the Asian American Pacific Islander community rather than going deep with one specific issue. We also reflect on the role PbP should play within the community.
The second was the political turmoil that has only grown as the year progresses. We've seen reinvigorated interest in activism and standing up for causes you believe in, but how do you convert this into action? Direct action workshops were selling out daily but we wanted to find additional ways to contribute.
So borrowing from our own model and the spirit of hackathons, we decided to create an event that allows professionals from all fields to use the skills they've developed on the job to contribute to the initiatives of local community organizations. New Yorkers are notoriously busy so we made it a one day commitment.
The goals of Project LEAD are:
- for participants to do work that has an immediate impact,
- increase awareness of community issues, and
- spur the development of new public-private partnerships.
Returning to PbP's founding slogan, we're here today to reverse apathy.
